How Balmorhea State Park Was Built

The park was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression. CCC crews hand-finished roughly 30,000 square feet of stone to build the pool, bathhouses, and Spanish Colonial-style structures that still welcome visitors today.

The spring-fed pool requires no chlorination because fresh water constantly flows through it. You'll swim alongside endangered fish species like the Comanche Springs pupfish and Pecos gambusia, plus turtles and other aquatic life that call these waters home.

Whether you're camping in an RV, staying for the day, or exploring West Texas on a road trip, Balmorhea offers a refreshing escape from the desert heat. The park's 34 campsites include options with water and electricity hookups, making it ideal for RV travelers.

I'm Jonathan Dies, owner of DFW RV Rentals, and I've helped countless families explore Balmorhea State Park in comfortable, well-maintained RVs perfect for multi-day adventures in West Texas. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or an extended desert exploration, the right RV setup makes all the difference at this unique destination.

The Heart of the Park: The World's Largest Spring-Fed Pool

The crown jewel of Balmorhea State Park is undoubtedly its magnificent spring-fed pool, a truly unique natural wonder in the heart of West Texas. Fed by the crystal-clear waters of San Solomon Springs, this sprawling 1.3-acre pool is recognized as the world's largest spring-fed swimming pool. Imagine diving into waters that maintain a constant, refreshing temperature between 72 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, regardless of the scorching desert heat or cool winter air.

What makes this pool so special, you ask? It's all thanks to San Solomon Springs, an artesian spring system where water is naturally pushed upward through geologic faults. This constant, abundant flow—over 15 million gallons daily—means the pool is continuously refreshed, eliminating the need for artificial chlorination. You're swimming in pure, natural spring water! With depths reaching up to 25 feet, the pool offers ample space for everything from a leisurely dip to serious underwater exploration. It's truly a swimmer's paradise, a snorkeling wonderland, and a diver's dream.

If you're eager to make a splash, you can learn more about swimming and diving directly from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Aquatic Life in the Pool

Prepare for an enchanting experience as you share the Balmorhea State Park pool with its fascinating aquatic residents. The clear, constant-temperature waters create a thriving ecosystem, making it a living aquarium. As you swim or snorkel, you'll often find yourself gliding alongside schools of fish, including two endangered desert species: the Comanche Springs pupfish and the Pecos gambusia. These tiny, resilient fish are vital to the ecosystem and a testament to the springs' ecological significance. You might also spot a pure genetic strain of the headwater catfish and even some Texas spiny softshell turtles gracefully navigating the depths.

It's an incredible opportunity to observe nature up close, but remember, these are wild animals in their natural habitat. We must respect their home by refraining from feeding or attempting to catch them. Human foods like bread can be harmful to their health, disrupting their natural diet and making them less likely to seek the foods that keep them healthy. Let's all do our part to protect these precious creatures.

Scuba and Skin Diving

For those seeking a more immersive underwater adventure, Balmorhea State Park is a premier destination for scuba and skin diving. The pool's remarkable clarity and consistent temperature make it an ideal training ground and a unique recreational dive site. Imagine exploring depths of up to 25 feet, observing the springs bubbling up from caverns, and swimming alongside the park's unique fish species. It's a truly unforgettable experience!

To ensure safety and preserve the delicate ecosystem, there are specific requirements for divers. Scuba instructors must present proof of insurance before diving. All certified scuba divers are required to show proof of certification and sign a Diving Agreement. Additionally, for your safety, all divers must have a partner. There is a $5 per person activity fee for scuba diving, which helps support the park's conservation efforts. While there isn't a dedicated high-altitude diving platform, the pool's natural rock walls and varying depths provide an excellent environment for divers of all skill levels.

Planning Your Visit to Balmorhea State Park

A trip to Balmorhea State Park is an unforgettable experience, but a little planning goes a long way to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit. This desert oasis is located in Toyahvale, Texas, nestled in Reeves County.

The park gates are open daily from 8 am to 7:30 pm, or until sunset, whichever comes first. The park office operates from 8 am to 5 pm, seven days a week, where our friendly staff can assist you with check-ins and any questions.

Given its popularity, especially on weekends, holidays, and during the summer, Balmorhea State Park has a daily visitation capacity limit of 650 visitors. This helps protect the park's natural resources and ensures a pleasant experience for everyone. To guarantee your entry, we highly recommend purchasing day passes online well in advance. The day-use fee is $7 per person for ages 13 and older, while children 12 and under can enter for free. Guests staying at the San Solomon Courts (when open) are exempt from this fee.

You can make your reservations directly online, which is always our top recommendation. Make reservations online to secure your spot and avoid disappointment, especially if you're traveling a long distance.

Essential Rules for Visiting Balmorhea State Park

To ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at Balmorhea State Park, we have a few essential rules to keep in mind. These guidelines are in place to protect both visitors and the park's unique environment:

  • No Lifeguards: Please remember, there are no lifeguards on duty at the spring-fed pool. Swim at your own risk.

  • Child Supervision: For the safety of our younger visitors, children 14 years of age or younger must be supervised by a parent, legal guardian, or other responsible adult over the age of 17 years at all times while in or around aquatic areas.

  • Pool Float Rules: You're welcome to bring your own pool floats! However, they must be soft-sided, inflatable, and no larger than 8 feet long and 4 feet wide. For everyone's safety, paddles, oars, and motorized devices of any kind are not allowed in the pool.

  • Prohibited Items in Pool Area: To maintain a clean and safe environment, cooking, pets, glass containers, grills, and tents are not allowed within the fenced pool area. Pop-up covers, however, are permitted for shade.

  • Grilling: If you plan to grill, please use the designated picnic areas outside the immediate pool enclosure. Remember to check for any burn bans that might be in effect.

  • No Fishing or Feeding Wildlife: As mentioned, the pool is a sanctuary for endangered species. Fishing is strictly prohibited throughout the park, and feeding any wildlife (including fish and turtles) is not allowed, as it can harm their health and natural behaviors.

  • Alcohol Policy: For the comfort and safety of all visitors, the consumption or display of alcohol is not allowed in the pool or day-use areas.

  • No Swimming in Canals: Swimming is only permitted in the main spring-fed pool, not in the surrounding canals.

Following these simple rules helps us preserve the beauty and safety of Balmorhea State Park for all to enjoy.

Getting There

Balmorhea State Park is truly a gem in West Texas, and getting there is part of the adventure. It's located about four miles west of the town of Balmorhea, Texas, on State Highway 17 in Toyahvale.

If you're coming from the east, perhaps from Dallas, Fort Worth, or San Antonio, here's the typical route:

  • From I-10 westbound, take the Balmorhea exit (#206).

  • Follow FM 2903 south to the town of Balmorhea.

  • Then, take State Highway 17 east for approximately 4 miles, and you'll arrive at the park.

If you're approaching from the west, like from El Paso:

  • From I-10 eastbound, take the Toyahvale/Ft. Davis exit (#192).

  • Follow Ranch Road 3078 east for about 12 miles, which will lead you directly to the park.

Parking Information: Upon arrival, you'll be directed to park in the main pool parking area. Please note that once this area is full, visitors will be directed to park on an adjacent county road and enter the park through a side gate. Parking on the highway is strictly prohibited, and law enforcement will issue tickets.

After-Hours Arrival Procedures: For our RV guests arriving after office hours (5 pm) or after the gate closes (7:30 pm or sunset), don't fret! If you have a reservation, check your email confirmation for site assignment details. If you're arriving without a prior reservation (which we don't recommend during peak season but understand sometimes happens), refer to the after-hours board located in front of the headquarters office for available sites. All customers arriving after hours must register and complete payment at Park Headquarters by 9 am the next morning. For those staying in the San Solomon Courts (when they reopen), guests arriving after 5 pm will need a 4-digit code for a key lockbox on their unit; these codes are typically emailed after confirming reservations and paying any cleaning deposits.

The Park's Rich History and Unique Ecosystem

The story of Balmorhea State Park is deeply intertwined with both human endeavor and the enduring power of nature. Its most iconic features were brought to life during a pivotal time in American history.

The park's development in the 1930s was a monumental undertaking by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). As part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, the CCC provided employment for young men during the Great Depression. Company 1856 of the CCC was responsible for constructing the park's main facilities between 1934 and 1941. These dedicated workers, using local materials, carefully built the massive spring-fed pool, the charming San Solomon Courts (an early motel that provided lodging for visitors), the bathhouses, and many other Spanish Colonial-style buildings. Their craftsmanship is still evident today in the approximately 30,000 square feet of hand-finished stone that defines these historic structures.

Over the years, the park has also faced its share of challenges and undergone significant renovations. In early 2018, a section of the pool wall collapsed, necessitating extensive repairs and a temporary closure. This $2 million repair project, supported by partnerships and donations, allowed the pool to reopen in March 2019. However, the park faced further closures in 2019 and 2021 for critical septic system repairs. These efforts highlight the ongoing commitment to maintaining and preserving this beloved state park for future generations. What began as a 46-acre park, originally deeded to the state in 1934, has even seen significant expansion, growing to 761.86 acres in 2020.

The Natural Environment of Balmorhea

Beyond its man-made marvels, Balmorhea State Park is a testament to the resilience and unique beauty of the desert environment. At its heart are the San Solomon Springs, artesian springs that continuously feed the park's aquatic features. This constant flow of water has shaped a remarkable ecosystem, even in the arid Chihuahuan Desert.

Historically, the area around the springs was a vast natural cienega—a desert wetland—but the construction of the pool in the 1930s altered this landscape. However, through dedicated conservation efforts, two man-made cienegas have been carefully reconstructed within the park. These vibrant wetlands now serve as crucial habitats, particularly for the endangered Pecos gambusia and Comanche Springs pupfish, along with the pure genetic strain of headwater catfish. These species are a living link to the springs' ancient past.

The park's natural environment extends beyond the water. You can explore areas of desert plains grasslands and shrub-invaded grasslands, home to a variety of desert flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, javelina, ground squirrels, and various reptiles like turtles and lizards. The skies and waters are often graced by a multitude of birds, both resident and migratory, as well as colorful insects like dragonflies. It's a fantastic place for nature study and bird watching.

To dig deeper into the fascinating biodiversity and geological processes that make this park so special, we encourage you to explore the park's nature resources provided by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Balmorhea State Park is not just a recreational spot; it's a living laboratory and a Texas Aquatic Science Certified Field Site.
