Find Texas's Coastal Gem on the Gulf Coast

  • Size: 321.4 acres with over 1,620 feet of fishing pier

  • Main Attractions: The legendary Big Tree (1,000+ years old), 300+ bird species including endangered Whooping Cranes, and extensive waterfront access

  • Camping: 101 RV sites with water/electric hookups, 25 walk-in tent sites, and youth group facilities

  • Fees: $5 daily per adult (kids 12 and under free)

  • Annual Visitors: Approximately 157,126 visitors (2022), with 60,000+ overnight campers yearly

Best For: Birdwatchers, anglers targeting speckled trout and redfish, families seeking coastal camping, and anyone wanting to experience authentic Texas Gulf Coast nature.

Lapping water and Gulf breezes define this coastal escape where marshlands meet ancient live oaks. The park sits between St. Charles Bay and Aransas Bay, creating a unique ecosystem that has attracted visitors for decades. Its shoreline—made of oyster shells, mud flats, and marsh grass rather than sandy beaches—offers a true working coast experience, not a resort destination.

The park's crown jewel, "The Big Tree," stands as a living monument. This State Champion Coastal Live Oak boasts a 35-foot circumference, 44-foot height, and 90-foot crown spread. It has survived hurricanes, wildfires, drought, flooding, and even Civil War bombing—a symbol of resilience that draws visitors from across the state.

I'm Jonathan Dies, owner of DFW RV Rentals, and I've helped countless families prepare their RVs for extended stays at Goose Island State Park, ensuring they have reliable, well-maintained travel trailers for their coastal adventures. Whether you're planning a weekend fishing trip or a month-long birding expedition, understanding this park's unique offerings will help you make the most of your visit.

Attractions and Activities for Every Visitor

Goose Island State Park truly offers something for everyone, whether you're an avid outdoors enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful escape. From exploring nature trails to casting a line into the bay, our RVs make it easy to bring all your gear and settle in for an unforgettable coastal adventure.

Beyond just relaxing, the park encourages active engagement with its environment. You can start on geocaching quests, hike along scenic paths, capture stunning landscapes and wildlife through photography, and immerse yourself in wildlife observation. The calm waters of the bays are perfect for paddling and boating, offering a different perspective of the park's natural beauty.

The Legendary 'Big Tree'

Standing as a silent sentinel for centuries, "The Big Tree" at Goose Island State Park is more than just an old tree; it's a living legend. This massive Coastal Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) is thought to be over 1,000 years old, with some estimates suggesting it could be nearly 2,000. In 1969, it was officially named the State Champion Coastal Live Oak, a title it proudly holds.

Its impressive dimensions truly set it apart: a circumference of 35 feet (11 meters), a height of 44 feet (13 meters), and a crown spread of 90 feet (27 meters). Imagine the stories this tree could tell! It has weathered countless hurricanes, prairie fires, droughts, floods, and even survived Civil War bombing. Its sheer resilience makes it a powerful symbol of endurance and a must-see landmark within the park. When you stand beneath its sprawling branches, you can't help but feel a connection to history and nature's enduring power.

World-Class Birding

For birdwatchers, Goose Island State Park is nothing short of a paradise. This coastal gem is a crucial stop along the Central Flyway, attracting an incredible diversity of avian life. Over 300 bird species have been recorded within the park's boundaries, making it a premier destination for birding in Texas.

One of the most exciting sights, especially during the winter months, is the endangered Whooping Crane. These magnificent birds migrate to the nearby Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and can often be spotted foraging in the shallow waters of St. Charles Bay, adjacent to the park. Their presence is a testament to the rich ecological significance of this area. Beyond the Whooping Cranes, you'll likely spot a vibrant array of other coastal birds, including graceful herons, neat egrets, and the unmistakable pink plumage of roseate spoonbills. The marshlands and oyster shell ridges provide ideal habitats for a wide variety of species, from wading birds to shorebirds and various waterfowl.

Winter migration, typically from October through April, is an especially vibrant time for birding, as numerous species make their way through or settle in the warm Texas climate. Bring your binoculars and a field guide – you'll be amazed by the feathered residents and visitors you encounter!

Fishing and Boating at Goose Island State Park

Anglers, rejoice! Goose Island State Park is renowned as an angler's paradise, offering exceptional fishing opportunities from its shores, boats, and a truly impressive pier. The park boasts a 1,620-foot long fishing pier that extends into the bay, providing ample space for casting a line. One of the best perks? When you're fishing from the shore or the park's pier, you don't need a Texas fishing license – a fantastic benefit of all Texas State Parks!

The shallow waters of Aransas and St. Charles Bays are teeming with popular sport fish. You can expect to reel in speckled trout, redfish, flounder, and drum. Blue crabs are also abundant, offering another fun catch for those looking to add a little variety to their cooler.

For those who prefer to hit the open water, the park provides a convenient boat ramp. We've found that our RVs, which are regularly maintained and cleaned, are perfect for towing your boat directly to the park. There's also a dedicated kayak and canoe launch, making it easy to explore the calm bay waters at your own pace. After a successful day on the water, you'll appreciate the fish cleaning station, making meal prep a breeze. If you forgot your gear or just want to try your hand at fishing, the park even offers a Tackle Loaner Program, providing rods, reels, and tackle boxes for visitors.

  • Park Hours: The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The park headquarters operates daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gate closes at 10 p.m. but remains accessible to overnight guests.

  • Busy Seasons: Goose Island State Park experiences high visitation during Memorial Day through Labor Day, October through Thanksgiving, and January through April. These periods often coincide with pleasant weather or school holidays, so expect more crowds.

  • Recommended Times to Visit:

    • Weather: The January average low is a mild 45 degrees, making winter a pleasant time. The July average high is 92 degrees, so summer can be quite warm. The wettest months are August, September, and October. The first freeze typically occurs mid-December, and the last freeze in early February. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures.

    • Wildlife: For prime birding, especially to spot the Whooping Cranes, plan your visit between October and April.

    • Crowds: If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during weekdays outside of the busy seasons.

  • Reservations: We strongly encourage you to make reservations online for both day passes and overnight stays, especially during weekends, school breaks, and holidays. The park often reaches capacity, and reservations are the only way to guarantee entry. You can also call the customer service center at (512) 389-8900 to make reservations. All late arrivals must report to headquarters by 9 a.m. the next morning to complete check-in.

Staying Updated: Park Alerts and Conditions

Before heading out, it's always a good idea to check for any current alerts or closures that might affect your visit. Goose Island State Park regularly posts updates to keep visitors informed.

  • Water Conservation Alerts: Due to dry conditions, the park occasionally issues water conservation alerts. During these times, we're asked to use water sparingly for drinking, cooking, and restrooms. It's a good practice to bring your own drinking water or be prepared to purchase bottled water at headquarters.

  • Burn Bans: Texas parks frequently implement burn bans, especially during dry periods. When a burn ban is in effect, no ash-producing fires (wood or charcoal) are allowed. You may still be able to use containerized fuel stoves, but always check the current status.

  • Boat Ramp Repairs: Please be aware that repairs on the bulkhead and walkway at the boat ramp are scheduled to begin on December 15, 2025. While the ramp will remain open, access may be reduced to a single lane at times, and the use of the courtesy dock could be restricted. The fish cleaning station will also have reduced capacity. We recommend planning your trip accordingly and being prepared to launch and depart quickly.

  • Official Updates: The best way to stay informed about real-time conditions, alerts, and closures is to check the park's official Facebook page. You can also contact the park directly.

  • Potential Closures: The park conducts prescribed burns between November and April for land management, which can lead to temporary closures of certain areas. Increased airboat traffic is also common during duck hunting season. Always check for holiday hours and any specific area closures before your visit.

Exploring the Rockport Area

While Goose Island State Park offers an abundance of activities, the surrounding Rockport area and nearby Corpus Christi provide even more attractions to improve your coastal getaway. Our RVs give you the flexibility to explore these charming towns and historical sites at your leisure.

  • Fulton Mansion State Historic Site: Just a short drive away, this beautifully restored 19th-century mansion offers a glimpse into Victorian-era life and innovation. You can tour the grand rooms and learn about the Fulton family's influence on the region.

  • Texas Maritime Museum: Located in Rockport, this museum celebrates the rich maritime history of Texas, from early exploration to the modern oil industry. It's a fascinating stop for history buffs.

  • Rockport Beach: If you're looking for a traditional sandy beach experience, Rockport Beach is a public beach located about 9 miles from the park. It's a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and building sandcastles.

  • Corpus Christi Attractions: For a day trip, head south to Corpus Christi, where you can visit the legendary U.S.S. Lexington, an aircraft carrier turned museum. The Texas State Aquarium offers an immersive look at marine life from the Gulf of Mexico and beyond, making it a fantastic family destination.

The Park's Rich History and Ecology

Goose Island State Park is not just a recreational area; it's a testament to both human ingenuity and the enduring power of nature. Its history is deeply intertwined with the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and its ecology showcases a vibrant coastal ecosystem unique to the Texas Gulf Coast.

The park's environment, characterized by its marshlands, oyster shell shoreline, and mud flats, is a dynamic habitat. These features contribute to a rich marine life, supporting everything from the fish caught by anglers to the abundant blue crabs that are a favorite delicacy of the Whooping Cranes. This blend of natural beauty and historical development makes for a truly compelling story.

The Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps

The foundational development of Goose Island State Park owes much to the dedicated young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). During the Great Depression, between 1931 and 1935, the CCC played a pivotal role in changing the acquired land into the public park we enjoy today.

Their contributions were immense and lasting. The CCC cleared the land, planted thousands of trees, and carefully cared for "The Big Tree," ensuring its preservation. They constructed many of the park's earliest facilities, including the iconic recreation hall, which they built using a unique material called shell crete—a concrete mixture incorporating local oyster shells. Beyond buildings, the CCC also laid roads, built bridges, and developed drainage systems, creating the infrastructure that continues to serve visitors decades later. Their hard work and craftsmanship are still evident throughout the park, offering a tangible link to this significant period in American history. You can learn even more about their impactful work by exploring The Look of Nature: Goose Island.

Volunteer and Support Opportunities

We believe in giving back to the places we love, and Goose Island State Park offers wonderful ways to do just that. The park relies on the dedication of volunteers to help maintain its beauty and improve visitor experiences. If you have a passion for the outdoors and some time to spare, consider volunteering. Opportunities include assisting in the park office, helping with maintenance tasks, or even lending your expertise to birding programs. You can stop by headquarters or check their Volunteer page for current needs.

Beyond volunteering, you can support the park and other Texas State Parks by donating to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation. Your contributions help fund vital conservation efforts and educational programs. For our younger visitors, the park also offers a fantastic Junior Ranger Program. Kids can pick up a free Activity Journal, complete a certain number of activities, and earn a badge, making their visit both fun and educational.

Frequently Asked Questions

When planning a trip to Goose Island State Park, we often encounter similar questions from our customers. Here are some of the most common inquiries, answered to help you prepare for your coastal RV adventure.

Can you swim at Goose Island State Park?

While Goose Island State Park is a coastal park, swimming is generally not recommended here. The park's shoreline is not a typical sandy beach. Instead, it's composed of concrete bulkheads, oyster shells, mud flats, and marsh grass. These characteristics, while vital for the local ecosystem, do not make for ideal swimming conditions.

However, if you're looking for a public beach experience with sandy shores suitable for swimming, Rockport Beach is a beautiful option located just 9 miles away. It offers designated swimming areas and is a popular choice for those wanting to take a dip in the Gulf waters.

Are pets allowed in the park?

Yes, pets are generally allowed in Goose Island State Park and most other Texas State Parks! We understand that your furry friends are part of the family, and our RVs are pet-friendly for this reason. However, there are a few important rules to follow to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable visit:

  • Pets must always be kept on a leash no longer than six feet.

  • They are not allowed inside any park buildings, including the park store, restrooms, or the recreation hall.

  • Owners are responsible for picking up after their pets and properly disposing of waste.

  • Always be mindful of wildlife and other visitors when walking your pet.

Following these guidelines helps keep the park clean, safe, and welcoming for all.

Do I need a fishing license to fish at the park?

This is a fantastic question for any angler! One of the great benefits of visiting Goose Island State Park is that you do not need a Texas fishing license when fishing from the shore or the park's 1,620-foot pier. This applies to all Texas State Parks, making it incredibly accessible for casual fishing.

However, if you plan to fish from a boat, including kayaks or canoes, you will need to have a valid Texas fishing license with the appropriate endorsements. If you're new to fishing or simply forgot your gear, remember the park offers a Tackle Loaner Program, providing rods, reels, and tackle boxes so you can still enjoy casting a line.
